If you look close, you can see the lids on the left are cracked. When clay dries, it shrinks, like a sponge. This places the clay piece under a certain amount of stress, which is natural for the material.
The lids on the right are freshly made. Even they were made, using a caliper, the same size as those on the left, they have not dried and they seem larger…for now!
