This piece was cast hollow. I carved a stick-like form from green floral foam about 12″ long and covered it in about 1/4″ of foundry wax. Afterwards I split the stick, end to end, like Abe Lincoln would have split rails, and carved away the foam. Then I re-assembled the two wax halves attached the gate and vents( gate is far upper left and the vent is the part on the lower left that connects back to the pouring cup on the end of the gate) and built the shell mold. This mold had shell material down on the inside of the form. It was cast without the use of core pins! It really is like a hollow log.
