This is a 1/2 gallon olla sitting in an improvised trimming ‘chuck’. The olla’s neck is pointed down, inside of a commercially made crock. Around the rim of the crock is a coil of soft clay that pads the olla, avoiding the crock’s edge from scarring the olla. The crock is centered on the wheel in a manner similar to centering a lump of clay, then it is secured in place with wads of soft clay at its base where it contacts the wheel head. The scraps of clay laying around the wheel head and the work table will be dried out and recycled as described in an earlier post. This olla has already been trimmed and is ready to be lifted out of the chuck.
