Lump of raw clay
The next few photos illustrate several stages in making an Olla on the potter’s wheel. Here we see a raw lump of clay that has been spiral wedged (kneaded) into a cone shape and placed on the wheel head. Wedging removes large air pockets and makes for a homogeneous mass of clay. If you spiral wedge, the clay platelets are then aligned in a circular pattern consistent with the revolving motion of the spinning wheelhead.
